Netherlands, The

The Netherlands coordinates and implements its official development assistance through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and channels it through its embassies. Its priority areas include reproductive and sexual health and rights, water, food security, and security and the rule of law. It also supports gender equality, environment, and climate change. Its priority countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

The Netherlands has shown staunch support for the water sector. In 2006, it established the Netherlands Trust Fund for the Water Financing Partnership Facility to support the implementation of ADB’s Water Financing Program. The facility assists rural, urban, and basin water demonstration projects as well as knowledge, capacity, and innovation services. To date, the Dutch government has committed about $44.3 million to the facility.

The country has also supported for ADB nonsovereign operations. From 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2020, private entities domiciled in the Netherlands provided $176.7 million in cofinancing for 6 nonsovereign projects.

As of December 2020, ADB’s Trade Finance Program (TFP) has supported 355 Dutch export and import transactions (through Dutch and non-Dutch banks) to developing Asia valued at over $310.4 million. Exports and imports were to eight countries, but mostly to Bangladesh and Viet Nam. Isolating TFP’s work with the Dutch banks, the TFP works with five banks operating in the Netherlands and has provided guarantees supporting $472.4 million in trade in over 240 transactions as of December 2020. The TFP has mobilized $30.1 million in cofinancing with banks operating in the Netherlands. This cofinancing helps leverage ADB resources and brings more support for developing members.
